Guides/Best Utah Photo Locations
Best Utah Photo Locations
6 min read
Utah has extraordinary photographic variety — canyon light, open valleys, mountain meadows, and clean city environments. Here are locations I return to regularly, with notes on timing, access, and what makes each work.
01Salt Lake City area
Jordan River Parkway — Wide paths, cottonwood trees, and good open shade. Works in every season. Golden hour in late afternoon hits particularly well in fall.
University of Utah campus — Brick buildings, tree-lined paths, and some beautiful grassy areas. Works especially well for portrait sessions and editorial work.
The Avenues — Residential streets with character, mature trees, and interesting architecture. Especially beautiful in spring bloom.
02Utah County
Provo River Bottoms — Cottonwood grove with stunning fall color. Peak season is mid-October. No permits needed. Popular on weekends — arrive early.
Rock Canyon — Quick access from Provo with dramatic rock walls and interesting light most of the day. Works for couples, portraits, and editorial.
Utah Lake shoreline — Open, painterly landscapes with wide views and reflective water. Sunrise and sunset are exceptional.
03Further afield
Antelope Island State Park — Big sky, dramatic terrain, and incredible light. Park entry fee applies. Best at golden hour. I frequently shoot couples sessions here.
Silver Lake, Big Cottonwood Canyon — Alpine meadows and wildflowers in summer, aspen groves in fall. Some driving required.
Park City area — Mountain terrain, historic Main Street, ski area architecture. Good option for destination clients already in the area.
04Timing matters more than location
Golden hour — the 45 minutes after sunrise and before sunset — transforms any location. Soft, directional light that flatters every subject.
Overcast days are underrated. Diffused cloudy light creates beautiful, even illumination perfect for portraits.
Midday summer sun is the hardest to work with. If timing is flexible, we'll schedule around it.
